LGBT in Singapore
Fact:
1. Section 377A of the Penal Code (Singapore) criminalizes “gross indecency” between men which includes consensual, private, adult homosexual acts. The penalty is up to two years’ imprisonment.
2. Tax rights, wills, and spousal insurance benefits do not include LGBT couples. There is no recognition of same-sex couples in most areas of concern such as hospital visitation and Central Provident Fund benefits.
The fact is, people who differ only in sexual orientation and are unafraid of who they are do not have equal rights as heterosexual people in Singapore.
Could somebody explain to me what is Singapore’s rationale behind the criminalizing and censorship of homosexuality? Because the last time I remember, the government made it very clear that in this country, religion and politics were two very separate elements.
This repression of homosexuality in Singapore can only emulate two things: obvious mixing of religious anti-homosexual beliefs with the law AND/OR narrow-minded homophobia and bigotry that dominates our “modernized” society. For a country that boasts social diversity and acceptance, we do contradict ourselves a lot in this area. Sadly, it is a reflection of how little social progress we’ve made.
I have a lot more to say on this topic, but I think this pretty much summarizes it all.
